This is a story, often funny, sometimes gripping, about a timeless Dream. ‘Family Aweigh’ is about Getting Away From It All. In this case – taking a town family including three teenagers for three years cruising the Mediterranean. Facing new dangers, learning new skills, experiencing the hard-work; and enjoying the rewards of idyllic environments.

It’s a book for you, if you love sailing whether under sail or by motor, and that special smell of the sea and boats. If you love that unique sentiment of entering a tranquil other-world the moment you leave port, bound for it doesn’t matter where. Live it all in ‘Family Aweigh’.

And it’s for you if living on the sea and cruising distant regions is as yet nothing but a Dream.

And yet a Dream can be transformed into reality, however unlikely that may seem when the problems of fulfilment are overwhelmingly more prominent than their solutions.

Reviewers have described 'Family Aweigh' as, 'funny', 'vividly described', 'inspiring', 'captivating', and a 'thoroughly enjoyable read' (The book's UK page is the best for seeing reviews.)

It is also a story that could be your guide and blueprint.

We met so many people around the Med who said, ‘You're so lucky! I wish we could do this too’. I always replied, ‘Well, do it.’ They would reply, ‘But we've got our work, and children at school.’ I replied, ‘We had our work, and children at school. But we did it.'

Our story took place a few years ago – but little has changed. The problems to solve, and their solutions, have changed little. Continuing education – a hard problem for us - is now a doddle through wireless internet.

And of course the cruising grounds, tranquil bays, and safe anchorages we recorded around the Med live on too, whether for sailboats or motor cruisers.

I look forward to your enjoyment of the book, and to welcoming you aboard.

Anf for those kind readers who have written to say how much they enjoyed the book - but what happened next? And how did the kids get on after their schooling at sea? there is now an Epilogue - which describes the remainder of our sea journey, and also, through a website, will enable you to see photographs of the crew, and episodes from the book which will hopefully extend your enjoyment of sharing our adventure.

So, welcome aboard as you join us on our journey.

..Michael Holt

P.S. The formatting problems (formatting is done by , not me!) mentioned in reviews December 2014 were solved - now this thoroughly readable book is restored to thorough readability. And I would advise the frustrated readers affected to demand a free new download from - so that they may at last enjoy the story they have so far been denied. All the best. Mike

This book was a wonderfully fun read. As an armchair sailor for many years, who hopes to eventually go to sea, it was quite fun to read this account of a land-based family deciding to pack it all up and make the move to a life afloat. While the family is British, it does not at all read like a "typical" dry, doll accounting of their trip. In fact it's chock full of humour, passion, self-effacing commentary on what they did right and even moreso what they did wrong, and a great accounting of the trials and tribulations of the transition from a land-based to sea-based life.

The book is part travelogue, part story of a dream realized, part guidebook, and part reminiscence of a life and time truly well lived. It discusses in-depth some of the challenges of moving a family with multiple kids from a typical town life to living on a powerboat and cruising their preferred section of the world, namely the Mediterranean. On top of that, it provides a lot of information on where they went, what they found, and how they handled the challenges of things such as schooling, priorities, money, and all those other things that can interfere with the dream life. It also does not skimp on discussing the children's feelings and priorities, and does a wonderful job of chronicling the transition of typical children to mature young adults over the course of their voyage.

All in all I could not recommend this highly enough. If you've ever considered or even dreamed of taking your family to sea, this book is a fun, interesting, enjoyable read which should certainly help to open your eyes to some of the highs and lows, and give you more to consider. The family did an amazing job of grasping their dream and not giving up until they achieved it, a trait which more of us could do with. Even if you haven't dreamed of it, this is a great read for any sailor or armchair sailor, or those interested in a life on the sea.

Family Aweigh eBook Michael Holt Reviews

A thoroughly enjoyable read, I could not help admiring the determination and resourcefulness shown by this family to achieve their dream - that of living a life afloat. Set in the Mediterranean, we accompany the author on a family's metamorphoses from town dwellers to seasoned sea salts. With gentle asides of self-mockery and a generous dose of humour - two very British attributes - the pitfalls as well as the advantages of travelling as a family on a boat are very well described. The story is not just about the author and his wife and children but also one of never giving up despite the odds, helped of course, by the various colourful characters that are roped in to give a hand.

This book can also be considered a travelogue in that we are taken on a journey through the various ports and locations in the Mediterranean. Although they surely still exist today, I'm sure that in the name of progress some would not be recognisable. They provide an interesting backdrop to the story and through the description of the author, at times assume the role of a character in the book.

I would recommended this book to all those who hesitate in fulfilling what they really want in life. This family certainly didn't and through their example we will surely be the better for it.
IT was great to inspire my family, and tells me I need a couple more years of age before we depart. Thanks for the insights.
Nice tale of a family on the med. funny and informative. If you like James Herriot's books then you would enjoy this.
Really enjoyed this snapshot into family life afloat on the Med, the authors honesty and wit made it a great read and the epilogue at the end was an enlightening fast forward into present times. Thanks Mike and family I hope life continues to offer you fair winds.
A good read. This is the story of a family (two kids) who buy a power boat and cruise the Mediterranean successfully (most of the time). The reader gets to join them on their journey, including the things that don't go to plan, or go completely wrong, and how the difficulties are overcome.
Good fun, good story, well written. Glad I bought it, and it will be read again over the coming years.
What a charming and interesting book! How fascinating to read how a family took to the sea with their three children. This book has all the elements of fun, facts and family events to make it a great read. The descriptions of the countries visited were detailed; the colorful characters encountered came to life with good prose. Enjoyed every page and admire the family for their insight in other ways of teaching one's children about life and travel.
