This book is a collection of mostly light hearted stories about tactical Naval Aviation off aircraft carriers in the 1960’s and 1970’s. It is not a history, per se, nor is it like one of the many fine, factual, first person accounts of by other Naval Aviators. The author’s impulse was to capture a snapshot of that culture and experience through both oral tradition—stories told by aviators that were too good to be lost; and his own experience. Thus was born Youthly Puresome and his passage through the various Breaks of Naval Air. Depicting the experiences of a typically irreverent young Naval Aviator, these stories stir memories of similar experiences in all who have flown Navy jet aircraft from the decks of aircraft carriers or from bases ashore. While the hardware may be different, these tales should resonate with other services, and the characters and life its ownself be familiar with those that know and love them.
Beginning in the Fall 1991 issue of The Tailhook Association’s quarterly publication, The Hook magazine, until Fall 2011, a series of these stories were published under the title “The Further Adventures of Youthly Puresome.” Youthly is the alter ego of Jack Woodul, a native of New Mexico who went through the Navy’s Training Command in the early ’60s and earned his Naval Aviator’s wings. He flew the A-4 Skyhawk in Vietnam, and after leaving active duty continued to fly F-8 Crusaders and F-4 Phantoms with the NAS Dallas Reserves. When not bagging flight time in gray jets, he was an airline pilot in “real life.” Now retired, he continues to fly and write about light airplanes and ranch life.
“The Further Adventure of Youthly Puresome” series led to an Outstanding Sea Story award by Fighter Squadron 201 in 1988; the 1994 Hook Magazine Contributor of the Year award; and a 1998 Tailhook Association Lifetime Achievement Award.

5 stars is good. Hey, it's the Highest rank in the Navy.. and the highest for books also. I have been lucky enuff to have read Puresome's tales since the beginning and was always frustrated by not being able to share with folks short of loaning out my treasured collection of The Hook. Now that has changed. Not only do I enthusiastically send link and recommendations to all my pals, but a veddy lucky few may even get as a b-day or Xmas present. The tales are not all frivolity and outrageous shenanigans--tho there's plenty of those to keep you grinning. As another reviewer points out, some reach down to an emotional core. "Rockets in the Rain" is a thoughtful look at what our nation feared from the "Evil Empire" and I challenge anyone, especially them that was there, to read "Keeper of the Flame" with dry eye. I send out that mini-masterpiece on Memorial Day. "No svelte nymphets simmering in coconut oil" in that one.

The Breaks of Naval Air The Further Adventures of Youthly Puresome eBook CDR Jack D Woodul USNR Ret Reviews
As an early 70's naval aviator I can relate to the book with similar experiences...although retired still relate to the junior officer attitude and club..this book brought me back over 45years ago...
As a retired Naval Aviator I enjoyed Puresome's view of all the things we did flying around in the Navy's finest supersonic aircraft. From combat missions in crowded skies above Nom to the darkest recoveries on our splendid carriers we held ourselves together with such humor as his writings depict. Jack Woodul (A.K.A. Youthly Pursome) has written a superb book about the training and life and times of a Naval Aviator in war and peace. Youthly's adventures are humorus and a joy to read. The artwork and drawings by Carl Snow enhance each chapter. This a book that all aviators should read.

Discovered this book from a recent review in The Hook. Superb in all respects! As a retired all hydraulic titanium warbird fighter pilot (F-14A/D), the author has brought my entire youth back to life! Nothing like manning three to try to get two off the pointy end to help sympathize with Youthly's Crusader's reliability woes. I've already written all my friends about this book, and can't recommend it highly enough for all of us who have been there, done that! Cheers, Sluggo
Now I know why my dad talks funny. As the son of a naval aviator, I wondered why my dad talked differently from everyone else. After reading this book, I realize that's how they all talked! Anyway, love the style of writing; that of a fresh and innocent (ahem) newly minted naval aviator trying to come to grips with the military, the gomers, the planes, and the quease. Highly recommended for those interested in military aviation of the period.
Jack Woodul nailed it. Though I didn't fly Scooters or Crusaders, I had almost the same experiences. Laugh may ass off at the USS Boat escapades, the flat hatting, RAG traing and the pranks, every throttle movement, peddle kick, scissors, barrel roll, blackout, happy hour. Damn. What a fun read. Youthly Puresome is a delight of character and depicted ever-so perfectly. Where the hell did Jack get his turns-o-phrase? I've heard so many of them but then he added another mother load of beauties. Again, laugh my ass off. Well done, blue side up...or down. "Oh, I've slipped the surely bonds..." (John Magee was my Mom's former boyfriend.)
One of the best books about Naval Aviation and the pure joy and terror of being a fighter pilot, I've ever read.
The irreverent antics will be frowned upon by the starchy types but will bring laugh-out-loud enjoyment for
all others. I retired as a Marine Master Guns with most of my service being in avaition. A different color uniform,
but I recognized the similarity of the players in this book to many of the Marine pilots I served with. For the
enlisted Marines in the trenches, watching the antics of those players made long hours spent busting your
butt fixing sick airplanes worthwhile. With PC being so prevalent in all branches of today's military,
I can only hope there are Youthly Puresome types still lurking in pilot's ready rooms, happy hours and elsehwere.
